Let’s face it: Florida, while it has amazing weather most of the time, also comes with specific climate issues. Florida Weather Yields Invasive Issues
Think about it: If you were hot, sticky, and constantly being rained on, you would want to find a better “home” situation, right? So for bugs and insects, it’s the same deal. What’s neat, at least to us bug enthusiasts, is that each bug, insect, roach, ant, moth, fly, or whatever you scream when you see one, there’s a pattern, a reason, and a solution.
In Florida, we see bugs like palmetto bugs, earwigs, and especially ants. There are over 10,000 species of ants in the world. Have you ever wondered how ants even work? Let’s target our focus on one of the bigger issues most Florida homeowners experience: ants.
“There are several types of interior ants: ghost, white footed, carpenter, and so on. Each one is treated differently. High temps and heavy rains can force many types of bugs into your home, so it’s important to first identify what bug or ant you’re dealing with,” Dave Brubaker of JD Smith Pest Control said.
There are dozens of ant species that call Florida home, and a solid few handful of those species can purposely find themselves living rent free in your home or business. In general, ants start their mounds, or nests, deep into their intended “home to be.” Once a nest has been built, ants create scented pheromone trails to their food and water source.
Most people see these trails, and treat them by spraying some sort of store bought spray. At first, the issue will seem fixed. In reality, matters could be multiplying. When a group of ants are separated from their colony, they will form a new colony, this is called budding. Now instead of one colony to worry about, you will have two colonies of ants in your home. It’s a vicious cycle, really.
